About The Hon. Chief Judge Melissa Gillespie
The Hon. Chief Judge Melissa Gillespie was appointed Acting Chief Judge on May 7, 2018 and appointed Chief Judge on October 19, 2018 for a seven year term.

Chief Judge Gillespie received her law degree from the University of Toronto and was called to the BC Bar in 1991. Soon after that, she began her legal career as Crown Counsel working in New Westminster, Surrey and Burnaby. Appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 2009, Chief Judge Gillespie was sworn in as a Provincial Court judge in February 2012. Following her appointment, she presided in the Fraser Region. In addition to sitting assignments, Chief Judge Gillespie was active in delivering education programs to judges and judicial justices, as well as to the larger legal community. She also served as a member of the executive of the BC Provincial Court Judges Association for several years.
 



About The Hon. Judge Michael Brecknell
The Hon. Judge Michael Brecknell was appointed to the Provincial Court of British Columbia in Prince George on June 29, 2000, and became Senior Judge on April 1, 2022.

Judge Brecknell moved to Prince George to take articles with the law firm Hope Heinrich and remained at the firm as an associate and then partner from 1986 to 2000. From 2002 until 2009 he was on the executive of the Provincial Court Judges’ Association of British Columbia; serving as President in 2008.

He was the

  • Administrative Judge for the Cariboo Northeast District from 2003 to 2008.
  • Associate Chief Judge from 2010 to 2013.
  • Regional Administrative Judge for the Northern Region from April 2013 to July 2019.
  • Chair of the Provincial Court’s Family Law Committee from its inception in November 2013 until June 2018.
  • Chair of the joint Bench and Bar Provincial Court Family Law Rules Revision Committee in 2012 which was constituted to bring the Rules into alignment with the new Family Law Act.
