Synopsis
The Vancouver Drug Treatment Court accepts both Federal and Provincial charges from anywhere in the province. Currently, any participant would be required to enter a guilty plea and relocate to Vancouver to engage with the program and receive the benefit of a non-custodial sentence on completion.
Changes that came into effect on September 11, 2023, and have adjusted the program requirements, notably shortening the duration from 12 months to 9 months. The implementation of additional amendments proposed by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada are under review.
The Honourable Judge Laura Bakan, Jayce Allen, Debra Carpentier, Raman Salooja, and Nicole Hermansen provide an update to these changes, open the dialogue about reform initiatives that reflect the current legal landscape, and share harm reduction best practices.
