This overview examines the causes and history of interface fires in BC since the early 1990s, traces the evolution of provincial responses to wildfire in the WUI, and key fire management changes that have been adopted to address WUI wildfires. Bruce Blackwell and Klay Tindall outline the current wildfire situation facing urban communities, examines whether the current legal requirements surrounding hazard abatement and forest management help or hinder the problem, and discusses the work still needed to mitigate the problem.
