The Honourable Robert J. Bauman, KC, and Stephen McPhee, KC, share an eclectic review of trends emerging in the world of dispute resolution-mediating and judging in their widest connotations.
The ‘who’, ‘what’ and ‘how’ of working in ADR are discussed, including topics such as:
- Demographic trends
- The changing and challenging subject matter of future disputes
- The ‘how’- new methods of resolving these disputes
The specific context of the discussion centers emerging technologies and the challenges, promise (or curse) of AI in the mix, is briefly explored.
About the Speakers
The Honourable Robert J. Bauman is the former Chief Justice of British Columbia and former Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal of Yukon.He was appointed as a justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1996; as a justice of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia in 2008; as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2009; and as Chief Justice of British Columbia in 2013. He retired on 1 October 2023.
Prior to becoming a judge, Mr. Bauman was in private practice with a large law firm in Vancouver. He worked in the areas of local government and administrative law. While practicing law, he taught administrative law at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law as an adjunct professor from 1991 to 1996.
From 2013 to 2016, Mr. Bauman served as Vice Chair of the Canadian Judicial Council. He is the founding Chair of Access to Justice BC.
Upon retirement from the Bench, Mr. Bauman received his King’s Counsel designation. Since retirement from the Bench, Mr. Bauman has practiced with CMB Mediation as an Arbitrator and Mediator.
Stephen McPhee, KC, is an experienced Family Law practitioner and Med/Arbitrator and managing partner at RLR Lawyers. Stephen has always had a strong interest in ADR and Collaborative Family Law. He has been the chair of the CBA Nanaimo ADR subsection at various times since 2004. He achieved the Conflict Resolution Certificate from the Justice Institute of BC in 2000 and is a Law Society of BC accredited Family Mediator and Arbitrator.
