The Province of British Columbia, in partnership with five First Nations—the Tahltan, Taku River Tlingit, Kaska Dena, Gitanyow, and Nisga'a Nations—launched consultations in 2025 regarding land use planning covering approximately 16 million hectares in the northwestern corner of the province, near the Alaska and Yukon borders.
The plans created through these processes define what can occur on the land base, identifying important areas for both Indigenous-led conservation and areas for potential natural resource development to create a wealth of new opportunities for economic development. Tania Demchuk and David Muter from the Ministry of Mining and Critical Materials, discuss what this means.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
This event will be broadcast from the traditional and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, including Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish and Musqueam First Nations. We encourage members to explore the rich history and knowledge of Indigenous people, and to continue learning about their experience in Canada past and present.
