The CBA Public Sector Lawyers Section presents:

A Legal Framework to Govern Online Political Expression by Public Servants

January 24, 2019 | 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM Eastern | Teleconference

To what extent should public servants be allowed to engage in political activities on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other online fora?  How should the existing case law regarding the appropriate balance between political neutrality of public servants and their Charter-protected right to political expression be applied to online activities?  Amanda Clarke and Benjamin Piper have recently written a paper which proposes a method for modernizing the framework for assessing the permissibility of online political activity by public servants (https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3251375).  In this session, they will explain their research and proposed reforms.
