Sponsored by:
Lawyers Financial

In this session the panelists will canvass the different approaches taken by certain Indigenous communities (including the Métis Nation Ontario, Métis Nation Alberta, Whitecap Dakota First Nation, Teslin Tlingit Council), to negotiating, implementing and exercising self-government, and the opportunities and challenges encountered along the way. These include the legal obligation on Canada to negotiate agreements subsequent and pursuant to a Final Agreement, the application of the Charter to self-governing Nations and governing as an inherent right vs. under delegated legislative authority.
