Sanctions and Export Controls in Practice: Managing Legal Risk in a Volatile Global Environment
Sanctions and export controls have become a routine feature of legal risk well beyond international trade practices. In 2026, lawyers working in corporate, M&A, real estate, finance, technology, and professional services are increasingly expected to identify sanctions exposure, assess due diligence gaps, and make defensible judgment calls—often without the benefit of specialist support. Regulators are paying closer attention to the role of professional “gatekeepers,” and failures in this area now carry real consequences for clients, firms, and individual advisors.
Be sure you are prepared when sanctions issues surface unexpectedly in otherwise ordinary files. Bolster your understanding of how sanctions risk is actually appearing in practice today, how enforcement expectations have sharpened, and how non-specialist lawyers can meet their professional responsibilities in a fast-changing and unforgiving regulatory environment.
Build defensible legal judgment by gaining know-how to:
- Recognize when sanctions and export control issues are engaged in non-trade matters.
- Understand what regulators now expect from lawyers as gatekeepers.
- Identify situations that require deeper due diligence or escalation.
- Advise clients on sanctions-related deal risk that goes beyond formal legality.
- Document decisions in ways that protect both client and counsel.
