CONTRIBUTING TO THE WELLNESS OF THE INDIGENOUS CLIENT: We All Have a Part to Play
Atlantic Canada, including what is now New Brunswick, is home to the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqoyik peoples and the Peace and Friendship Treaties. These treaties formed the basis of what was meant to be a long-lasting relationship between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in this region. Through the lens of holistic wellness, relationships remain of central importance to the overall wellness of Indigenous people, and treaties continue to play an imperative role in the foundation of nation-to-nation building and reconciliation, as expressed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. From this panel you will hear from women lawyers working in roles aimed at upholding this treaty relationship through treaty rights education and Aboriginal rights advocacy. The panelists will explore how the Peace and Friendship Treaties provide the cornerstones for the relationship we are all parties to as treaty people, and what role these relationships play in the overall wellness of Indigenous clients.

Moderator: Marion Levi, student-at-law in the Burke Law Group, Fredericton
Donna Gauvin, Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn Inc., Eel Ground
Gillian Paul, Wolastoqey Nation in New Brunswick, Fredericton

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT: A Work in Progress
Have you ever felt challenged in achieving better management of your legal practice? For many lawyers, this objective can feel like a moving target and significantly impact wellness. This session will explore the perspectives, insight, and lessons learned by three experienced New Brunswick lawyers. Their practices differ, but these women share one important goal – a continuing, proactive approach to practice management. Following this session, guests will return to navigating their busy practices equipped with practical, applicable advice.

FINDING YOUR WHY
Simon Sinek, author and organizational expert, says that people are inspired by a sense of purpose (or “why”) and that this question should be answered before “how” or “what”. If you know your “why” you can bear almost any how.  Join us for a candid conversation with two women lawyers as they share their stories of how they attempt to find their “why” through the practice of law, and their continuing journey towards a purposeful practice.

Alyson Townsend, Resonance Inc, Saint John
Janet Thompson-Price, Thompson Price Law, Saint John

MANAGING THE THINGS YOU CAN’T UNSEE: Vicarious Trauma in the Legal Profession
Just like second-hand smoke, repeated accounts of traumatic experiences can cause damage to those who are exposed to it. Many of us work on tough cases that deal with very sensitive matters and this can alter the way we navigate and view the world. Through the personal experiences of two New Brunswick lawyers this session will focus on what vicarious trauma is, the warning signs and the ways in which we can protect ourselves from its harmful effects.

Melanie Cassidy, New Brunswick Legal Aid Services Commission, Moncton
Kathryn Gregory, Q.C., Office of the Attorney General, Fredericton
James Robinson, Clinic of Applied Psychology, Moncton

MURIEL CORKERY-RYAN, Q.C. Award  will be presented to the Hon. Justice Marie-Claude Bélanger-Richard
