OBA Charity and Not-For-Profit Law PROGRAM | 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM
Whether you represent a charity or a not for profit, and whether the organization is large or small, it will more than likely be carrying on activities in more than one jurisdiction in Canada. If your clients have a website, sell products on the internet, provide services online, or operate close to the Quebec or Manitoba border, this program will be directly relevant to your practice.
Our panel of experts will focus on what you need to consider when advising an organization that operates across Canada, including:
- Online activities and online commerce
- Privacy matters
- Intellectual property issues and branding
- Practical considerations of having a website
- Tax implications (HST, GST, PST), as well as
- Meeting your Professionalism requirements:
- How much advice can I give to my client about operating outside Ontario?
- What are my obligations as a lawyer to my client under the Rules of Professional Conduct?
- What are the restrictions on me as a lawyer who is only licensed to practice in Ontario?
This builds on the April program that focused on extra provincial registration requirements for organizations carrying on activities across Canada and will be of interest to lawyers practicing in large or small firms, sole and rural practitioners, and to young lawyers as well as more-experienced lawyers.
