OBA Inclusive Leaders Series

People bring with them a unique combination of personalities traits and leadership styles which impact not only their legal practices but how they absorb new information and ideas, and incorporate it into their interactions with their colleagues and communities.

You have been provided with diversity and inclusion training, gained an understanding of unconscious bias, prejudice and discrimination, and see further opportunities and are committed to participate in enhancing inclusion in the workplace. All of this knowledge is vital to becoming an Inclusive Leader. How do you incorporate this information with your own unique traits as a lawyer and from a broader perspective, as a person?

This year's Inclusive Leaders Series will focus on assessing yourself as a leader.

Our distinguished panelists will discuss personality and leadership styles as it relates to equity, diversity and inclusion where you will have the opportunity to learn how to assess your own personality and leadership style.  Take these insights through our remaining sessions where our faculty will examine how you can use specific personality traits and leadership styles to develop and grow as an Inclusive Leader in an authentic way.

PART 2:  BEYOND TRANSACTIONAL VS. TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP
Thursday, November 24, 2022
9:00 am to 10:00 am (ET)

Often, leaders are labeled as transformational or transactional. Transactional leadership is seen as focused on measurements of success by offering positive and negative enforcement to achieve results while transformational is seen as focused on understanding the needs and leading by motivating and inspiring others. While it may seem like one is more conducive to becoming an inclusive leader, is there more to the story? Our panelists will explore which elements of these and other leadership styles can serve as building blocks and how to incorporate these skills in your development as an Inclusive Leader.

FACULTY

Dr. Ho Kwan Cheung, Assistant Professor & Principal Investigator, Gender Issues Research Lab, University of Calgary
Daniel Daniele, Partner, Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP

PART 3:  INTROVERTS, EXTROVERTS AND AMBIVERTS AS INCLUSIVE LEADERS
Wednesday, November 30, 2022
9:00 am to 10:00 am (ET)

One commonly discussed aspect of personality and leadership is whether someone is an introvert, extrovert or ambivert.  Hear our faculty discuss the traits of each personality type and how to be an Inclusive Leader by using your "type" to assist you in your growth.

Dr. Ellen Choi, HR Management & Organizational Behaviour, Toronto Metropolitan University

PART 4:  AUTHENTIC AND INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE AND EDI IN THE LEGAL WORKPLACE
Thursday, December 1, 2022
9:00 am to 10:00 am (ET)

Authentic leadership refers to a style of leadership that focuses on self-awareness and vulnerability. How can this style of leadership have a positive impact on inclusivity? How can one be authentic in an environment where you have traditionally been trained not to show weakness?  How does this resonate with your own personality?  Our experts will discuss how you can be an authentic and inclusive leader in a way that works with your individual style.
