Decades of overfishing has resulted in a significant decline of our fish stocks with almost a third of the world’s assessed fisheries now under threat. One of the key contributors to overfishing is subsidies to offset the cost of doing business. In June 2022, Members of the WTO reached a multilateral agreement to tackle harmful fisheries subsidies, after more than two decades of negotiations. This is the first significant step to curbing subsidies. While putting an end to harmful fishing subsidies is critical to ensuring sustainable fishing and improving the ocean ecosystem, what does this mean for Canadian businesses? Join our panel of experts, including a representative from the WTO Secretariat, to hear the latest developments, and potential legal implications, including:

  • What constitutes illegal fishing and overfished stocks
  • What constitutes harmful subsidies and what are the implications to businesses, and
  • Practical tips for spotting issues and preparing clients for anticipated changes to the complex world of fisheries and fisheries subsidies
