Persuasion at the Appellate Level: What Moves the Court

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 22, 2025 |12:00 - 1:00 pm (SK) | Zoom
Speaker: The Honourable Chief Justice Leurer, Court of Appeal of Saskatchewan
Moderator: Allison Graham, MLT Aikins LLP
Cost: Free for CBA Members

Gain practical advice and insight into the art of appellate advocacy from the Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal. Topics will include:

  • The art of the narrative: You commonly hear that the best advocates “tell a story”. What does that mean in practice?
  • Factum content and structure: Where should you argue the facts – in the fact section, during argument, or both? How many adjectives should you use in a factum? How do you make your point without being overly dramatic?
  • Preparation for appeals: Another common piece of advice is that lawyers should “be well-prepared” for an appeal. Hear directly from the Chief Justice about what that means in practice and what sets one lawyer’s preparation apart from another’s.
  • How Court of Appeal judges prepare: What documents Court of Appeal justices read in advance? What are they doing to prepare themselves for the appeal hearing? What does that mean for the materials counsel is filing?
