Earlier this year, Black Lives Matters protests ignited around the world following several high-profile killings of Black men and women at the hands of police officers, including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. This phenomenon is not unique to the United States – closer to home, there have been several cases of Black and Indigenous Canadians needlessly dying after interactions with law enforcement. The Black Lives Matter protests received wide-spread support and participation, including in the province of Alberta, and have resulted in a renewed call to address racism in our own communities including within the legal profession.

CBA Alberta members are invited to join our panel for a frank discussion about the lived experiences of Black and Indigenous lawyers practicing in Canada, the challenges the profession faces, what you can do as an individual to make the legal profession more inclusive, and how the legal profession as a whole can respond to calls to address anti-Black, anti-Indigenous and other forms of racism.
