"Legislative Update on Federal Privacy and Access Law"
Timothy Banks, Past Chair of the CBA National Privacy and Access Law Section and legal counsel with Ottawa based nNovation LLP, will provide an overview of recent initiatives to amend federal access and privacy law. Although Bill C-11 died on the order paper when the recent federal election was called, the proposals to replace PIPEDA with a new federal privacy law called the Consumer Privacy Protection Act (CPPA) and create a new Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act are likely to be reintroduced in a different form. Tim will discuss some of the more controversial aspects of that Bill that the government might take another look at, particularly in light of Quebec's enactment of changes to its private sector privacy law.
