Speaker: John Weekes is a senior business advisor at Bennett Jones LLP.  He helps clients understand how trade negotiations and agreements can impact their business interests and advises on what they can do to advance and defend their interests. He has served in various senior capacitates in the Canadian government including as ambassador to the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations that led to the formation of the World Trade Organization (WTO), chief negotiator for the NAFTA, and ambassador to the WTO.

John will be introduced by his colleague at Bennett Jones, Darrel Pearson, who is head of the firm's international trade and investment practice.

Topic: Canada U.S. Trade and the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement)

Description: An overview of the major challenges for Canadian trade in the year ahead including the path and prospects for ratification of the USMCA, efforts to remove the Section 232 tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum exports to the U.S., and implementing the CPTPP (the new Trans-Pacific trade deal) and making it work for Canadian businesses.

John and Darrel Pearson would be happy to answer any questions the audience might have about these matters or other current trade issues such as Brexit, the U.S. China trade war and Canada’s efforts to diversify its trade including with China.
