Synopsis

Please join us for an evening of education and discussion with the following distinguished guests:

Michael Lawless, Barrister & Solicitor with the Legal Services Branch, Ministry of Attorney General, will give an overview of the civil forfeiture act and recent legislative amendments to address money laundering.  He will also give an update on current hot issues in the field that cross the boundary between criminal and civil forfeiture law.

The Honourable Judge Carmen Rogers, Regional Administrative Judge for Vancouver Island, will discuss the Early Resolution and Case Management pilot project which has been in place in Victoria since May 13, 2019.  This new process supports early resolution for family law matters in Provincial Court through enhanced assessment and consensual dispute resolution (CDR) along with a court case management process.  This session will look at how the Early Resolution project is working since its implementation, tips and tricks from the bench and registry in using the process successfully, and a chance to have a discussion and raise any questions counsel may have.  Please send any questions in advance to Samantha de Wit at sdewit@bhmlawyers.ca prior to October 9th.

The Honourable David Eby, Attorney General of British Columbia, will join us after his sitting day at the Legislature to speak about the government’s current justice initiatives, and to answer our questions about these initiatives and the state of the justice system in BC.  This is a unique opportunity to meet with the Minister to discuss what is on the minds of Victoria lawyers.
