This meeting is being hosted by the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm - Lower Mainland Section.

Derek Jackson will give a presentation setting out the statutory and administrative framework governing our professional conduct and what is meant by “civility”. He will then discuss case law, including the Groia decision, and addressing cases between lawyers and judges, and between lawyers and third parties.

Speaker Bio
Derek is a practitioner in a solo, general legal research practice in Victoria. He is called to the Bar in BC and Alberta. Derek practices as a research counsel and consultant to private law firms in Alberta and British Columbia, in-house counsel for oil and gas companies and arbitrators.  In addition, he has taught legal research and writing courses (beginner and advanced) at the University of Victoria Law School. If asked whether there is any one area of law that is his “expertise”, he will answer it’s the ability to find, analyze and convey legal answers/opinions for all areas.
