Synopsis
Please join the Vancouver Island and Vancouver CBA Aboriginal Law Sections for a meeting focused on the new challenges faced by Indigenous communities due to the pandemic. Our speaker Berry Hykin will canvass various issues related to COVID-19, such as:
- continuity of operations and best practices for conducting governance and administration remotely;
- declarations of emergency;
- community protection laws and other measures;
- the new First Nations Election Cancellation and Postponement Regulations (Prevention of Diseases); and
- basic employer obligations, new COVID-19 leaves, re-opening plans.
Speaker Bio
Berry Hykin is a solicitor at Woodward & Company where she works closely with First Nations to negotiate, develop, and implement legal and administrative tools to support self-governance and protect Indigenous traditions and ways of life. Her practice includes lands and environmental management, on-reserve housing, band governance, economic development, and employment law focusing on assisting employer Aboriginal groups. Berry is also trained in civil and family law mediation.
