ONLINE MEETING: Environmental Liability of Corporate Actors (Directors, Officers, Agents… and More!)
This meeting is being hosted by the Environmental Law Section.

Speaker(s): Charles Bois, Miller Thommson
Jana McLean, Iris Legal
Time: Thursday, November 5, 2020, 12:30pm - 1:30pm (PT)
CPD Hours: 1.00 hour

Penalties for violations of environmental laws in Canada can be significant. In order to encourage compliance, most environmental statutes in Canada allow for fines to be imposed not just on the company itself, but also on directors, officers, agents and even employees in certain circumstances. Parent companies also have been found responsible for environmental harm in some cases.

Environmental law practitioners Charles Bois (Miller Thomson) and Jana McLean (Iris Legal) will overview the environmental liability risks facing individuals and related companies. Both provincial and federal regimes will be discussed.  Due diligence – a key defence – and risk management strategies also will be reviewed.

Exposure to such liability can make individuals in companies nervous and ask their lawyers hard questions about their exposure and how to reduce it. It is a spooky time of year (Happy Hallowe’en!), making this presentation timely!
