Synopsis

Franchise law is getting complicated.  The Franchises Act, in force for three years now, is full of traps for the unaware.  Whether you are a solicitor or litigator, do you have what it takes to practise franchise law successfully and reduce your risk of errors and omissions?

This fast-paced and interactive two-hour program, presented by an expert panel, will dive into some of the key pitfalls in the evolving franchise practice, including the following:

  • advising franchisors and franchisees/prospective franchisees
  • drafting and reviewing franchise disclosure document
  • representing parties on sales and resales of franchised businesses
  • advising parties about default and terminations rights, and post-termination restrictive covenants
  • litigating franchise disputes
  • limitation periods


The program will also include an update about some recent judicial developments and an interactive Q&A and polling features about fact scenarios.

 

 
About Ben V. Hanuka

About Tony Wilson QC
Tony Wilson Q.C. regularly practices in the areas of franchising, licensing and IP law and is ranked as a leading Canadian Franchise lawyer by LEXPERT, Who’sWho Legal and Best Lawyers in Canada.

Between 2014 and 2016, he served as an advisor to the British Columbia Government with respect to the drafting of the BC Franchises Act and Regulations, which came into force February 1, 2017. He was Course Chair of the British Columbia Continuing Legal Education program “B.C.’s New Franchise Act

About Judy A. Rost
Judy A. Rost is a senior litigator practising in civil litigation with an emphasis on business disputes and estate matters. Judy is the group leader of the firm’s Business Disputes and Franchise Practices and a member of the Intellectual Property + Technology and Wills, Estates + Trusts Practice Groups. She has acted for plaintiffs and defendants in all types of business disputes including shareholder, partnership, real estate, and franchise matters.

Judy has been recognized in legal publications for her expertise in commercial litigation and franchise disputes. Often clients seek her out to enforce their intellectual property rights or to get an injunction to preserve assets. She also has handles complex trust and estate matters.
