Synopsis

The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program at Vancouver Island University is a post-secondary course that brings incarcerated students ("inside learners") together with traditional university students ("outside learners"). This successful and well-regarded program provides outside learners with an understanding of the lives of incarcerated individuals and the paths that they took that brought them into conflict with the criminal justice system. At the same time, inside learners experience being accepted as peers with the traditional students, giving them a foundation for reintegration into society and potentially inspiring continued post-secondary studies.

At this meeting, Elizabeth McLin, PhD, Professor of Criminology at Vancouver Island University, will provide an overview of the inside-out program and explain how students apply to be considered for admission. In addition, Kathleen Kerr-Donohue, Defence Counsel, will share her positive experiences participating in the VIU inside-out program as an "outside learner" in 2017.
