Synopsis

Join Jodi Simkin for a discussion on the many challenges and complications facing Indigenous communities wanting to see their cultural treasures returned through the process of repatriation.

ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER

For more than thirty years, Jodi Simkin has actively supported Indigenous communities as they search for their missing ancestors and artifacts. As the former Executive Director of Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre, the oldest facility of its kind in Canada designed specifically to house a repatriated collection, she helped champion the return of cultural patrimony from around the globe. As the Director of Cultural Affairs and Heritage with the Klahoose First Nation, she launched an international effort to find the more than 300 missing ancestors. She continues to assist Indigenous museums in both Canada and the US. Jodi is also a previously appointed member of the American Association on Indian Affairs Repatriation Working Group and a co-editor of Knowledge Within: Treasures of the Northwest Coast published by the UBC Museum of Anthropology.
