Synopsis

“Greenwashing” has been in the public eye recently due to high-profile complaints to the federal Competition Bureau regarding false or misleading advertising by large companies regarding environmental issues. Ecojustice and the University of Victoria’s Environmental Law Centre (ELC) called for an investigation into Keurig’s claims that its “K-cup” coffee products were “Green” and easily recyclable, which led to a $3 million penalty against Keurig in 2022. More recently, Ecojustice, Stand.earth, and members of the public have requested that the Competition Bureau investigate Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) regarding advertising about its commitments to climate action while it continues to finance fossil fuel development.

Calvin Sandborn, KC, Legal Director at the ELC who brought the Kuerig complaint, and Andhra Azevedo, Lawyer at Ecojustice who is working on the RBC complaint, present on their cases and discuss the implications for companies that make public representations about sustainability.
