Jim Sullivan, Q.C. and Mathew Goodwill discuss recent amendments to British Columbia's Class Proceedings Act, including changes regarding the distribution of cy-pres funds, class composition, and multi-jurisdictional proceeding.
Speaker Profile
Jim Sullivan is senior trial and appellate counsel, with experience in a wide range of complex litigation matters.  He has appeared as counsel in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada.  In 2013, Benchmark named Jim Canada’s Class Action Litigator of the Year.  In 2017, the Attorney General of British Columbia appointed Jim as Queen’s Counsel.  In 2018, Who’s Who Legal referred to Jim as “the dean of the British Columbia product liability and class action bars.”

Jim has represented clients in numerous major corporate commercial, class action, energy, contaminated site, regulatory offence, constitutional and product liability cases.  He also advises clients on national and international compliance and foreign and domestic anticorruption.

Mathew Good practices class actions and complex commercial litigation with Good Barrister in Vancouver. He has particular experience with plaintiff-side actions in the areas of consumer protection, tort law, antitrust and competition law. He remains active academically, publishing in these areas and on the law of civil procedure and judicial administration. Between 2012 and 2017, he taught Statutory Interpretation at the law schools at the Universities of British Columbia and Victoria.
