MANITOBA BAR ASSOCIATION
INSOLVENCY LAW SECTION
NOTICE OF MEETING

DATE: Thursday, March 5, 2020
TIME: 12:00pm – 1:00pm
LOCATION: Moot Court, Robson Hall, 224 Dysart Road, Winnipeg
TOPIC: Remarks from the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, Ms. Elisabeth Lang

This is a collaborative event between the Insolvency Law Section, Young Lawyers' Section and Robson Hall.

Even if you know nothing about bankruptcy law and didn’t think you would ever want to explore this area of law, you might want to attend. This talk is about “Everything you ever wanted to know about the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy but were afraid to ask.” Guest speaker Elisabeth Lang will start with the basics of “Insolvency Law 101” before explaining what she does as the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, and what kind of work happens in her office, including priorities, trending topics and significant cases.

Elisabeth will also touch on how the Superintendent’s office decides to intervene in cases.  Those interested in Canadian federalism will want to sit up and pay attention. Recent significant bankruptcy cases coming out of the SCC make this a timely topic, including:

ETR v Superintendent of Bankruptcy, 2015 SCC 52
Alberta v Moloney, 2015 SCC 51
Saskatchewan v Lemare Lake Logging, 2015 SCC 53
Orphan Well Association v Grant Thornton, 2019 SCC 5

Please RSVP to the Manitoba Bar Association online.  A light lunch will be provided courtesy of Robson Hall. There is a live webcast available for this session if you cannot attend in person.

Attendance at this MBA Section meeting can be applied towards your Law Society of Manitoba's Continuing Professional Development requirement for a maximum of one hour.
