Analysis Group

Competition policy is generally aimed at achieving certain important policy objectives, including economic efficiency, lower prices, and improved quality and product choices. But Canada has other democratically-identified policy objectives which may conflict with competition policy objectives. As one example, the Covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated the importance of the surety of domestic supply of critical products. There are numerous other examples, including regional and sector-specific development priorities, national security concerns, and social equity and media diversity objectives.

In this panel, we examine areas where competition policy competes with other democratically identified policy objectives, which may be addressed through other legislative and regulatory frameworks, and explore the proper role of competition law, policy, and advocacy within these areas.
