We will explore the roles and responsibilities of risk identification and mitigation with respect to the “Bennett Environmental” case study.  The session will help participants brainstorm the myriad of risks for all parties and discuss what methods of protection/acceptance must be implemented. This session will be interactive and will offer participants the opportunity work collaboratively to gain a greater understanding of how to manage risk.

Case Study
(more information will be provided at the session):

The provincial and federal government are approached by a company to install an incinerator in an economically depressed part of New Brunswick.  This area of New Brunswick has the highest unemployment rate in the province, has the highest number of families on social assistance in the province, and has the lowest median income in the province.  The plan would be to import hundreds of thousands of tonnes of toxic waste to be burnt there. The company assures the governments that it is “clean burning”.  The company promises massive job creation.   The project is worth over $30 million dollars. The site of construction is near residential areas, fisheries operations, crown lands and First Nations land.
What are the risks?
