SOGIC: Trans Advocates and Advocacy

Date/Time: Tuesday November 30, 2021 | 12:00 - 1:00 pm (SK) | Zoom Webinar
Speaker(s): Cat Haines, JusticeTrans
Section Chair: Barton Soroka, Gerrand Rath Johnson LLP
Cost: Free for CBA Members

Based on preliminary findings from JusticeTrans' pan-Canadian Two Spirit, trans, non-binary and gender nonconforming (2STNBGN) access to justice legal needs assessment, advocates and advocacy play a critical role in 2STNBGN people's ability (or inability) to access justice in a meaningful way. This talk explores 2STNBGN people's experiences with legal and governmental "dead ends" - and how advocates and advocacy (often self-advocacy) play a critical role in attempting to meet the legal and justice needs of 2STNBGN people. We will explore how lawyers and other actors within the legal system can act as meaningful advocates for 2STNBGN people, what 2STNBGN people indicate needing to trust lawyers and legal institutions, and ultimately how you can help 2STNBGN people access the justice they need and deserve.

The Law Society of Saskatchewan has approved this Webinar for one hour (1.0) of Continuing Professional Development.

This will be a zoom webinar so you can join via your computer or phone. We will provide instructions when you register of how to access Zoom if you are not familiar with this format.
