Presented by the CBA National Criminal Justice Section
Individuals affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) experience a range of challenges which render them more likely to come into conflict with the law and, arguably, less culpable for their actions and less likely to be deterred by typical sentencing options.
Our expert panel will explore:
- the reasons for the overrepresentation of people with FASD before the courts;
- their challenges in accessing justice at every stage -from investigation to sentencing;
- current initiatives exploring alternatives to criminalizing persons living with FASD;
- and shorter-term practical accommodations available to lawyers and judges when dealing with accused persons with this disability.
