The Litigator’s Next Move: Practical Skills for Taking Greater Ownership of a File

As your litigation practice develops, expectations will change. You are no longer responsible only for executing the work well. You are increasingly expected to exercise judgment about where the matter should go, what is worth pursuing and what you should recommend to the client or senior counsel.

Should you bring the motion? Is there a realistic path to an earlier resolution? What financial interests are shaping the parties’ decisions? Could a litigation misstep expose you personally to sanctions? What will a decision in one proceeding mean for another? These are the decisions that can save a client significant time and money, build confidence in your judgment and position you for greater responsibility.

The Litigator’s Next Move is a six-part practical series that develops the skills behind those judgment calls. Experienced litigators will show you how to assess competing options, pressure-test a proposed course of action, anticipate consequences and give clear, defensible advice while taking greater ownership of the file and the client relationship.

For firms and legal employers, the result is litigators who can see beyond the task in front of them, recognize risks and opportunities earlier, exercise sound judgment and handle increasingly complex matters with less day-to-day direction.
